The past year in the ADL program has been a transformative journey, helping me grow and understand what it takes to be a leader. However, it’s crucial also to look ahead. As a leader, I must continuously reflect on where I’ve been and where I’m headed to drive future growth and success. In her TED Talk, Roselinde Torres emphasizes the importance of leading with flexibility and understanding the unique dynamics of your team. She argues that past methods don’t guarantee future success, encouraging leaders to try new approaches tailored to their group. Torres highlights three critical questions that every leader should ask: "Where are you looking to anticipate change?" "What is the diversity measure of your network?" and "Are you courageous enough to abandon the past?" (TED, 2014). These questions have guided my reflection on where I am going after the ADL program.
What worked?
A few key aspects worked particularly well throughout my time in the ADL program. The self-directed learning approach allowed me to take ownership of my learning journey, which led to a deeper understanding of digital learning and leadership. My innovation plan on blended learning in middle school math helped address gaps caused by Senate Bill 2124, and I was able to apply the COVA framework to create more student-centered learning environments. Additionally, gradually implementing my ideas allowed me to test strategies in real-time, refine them, and engage students effectively.
What could you do better?
I could have improved by engaging stakeholders earlier in the process. Collecting more diverse feedback from fellow educators and administrators would have provided different perspectives and helped me refine my innovation plan sooner. Time management was also a challenge at times, balancing the demands of teaching and course development. Setting clearer, smaller milestones from the start would have helped me stay more on track.
What lessons have you learned?
One of the key lessons I’ve learned is the importance of adaptability. Just as Roselinde Torres emphasizes, leading with flexibility is essential to success. This has been true in my innovation project, where the ability to pivot based on student needs and feedback was crucial. Another lesson is the power of collaboration. By leveraging my Personal Learning Network (PLN), I gained insights and support that strengthened my leadership capabilities. Finally, I’ve learned the value of constant reflection, which ensures I stay aligned with my goals and objectives.
Where are you looking to anticipate change?
I am looking to anticipate change in the area of educational technology and personalized learning. With the rapid advancements in digital tools, I’m actively exploring how emerging technologies, like AI and adaptive learning platforms, can further enhance blended learning environments. Additionally, I’m keeping an eye on policy shifts in education that may impact curriculum design and learning strategies for advanced middle school students.
Are you courageous enough to abandon the past?
Yes, I am willing to abandon past methods that are no longer effective. The ADL program has taught me that holding on to outdated practices can hinder growth. Moving forward, I’m committed to continuously assessing my strategies, making necessary changes, and embracing new approaches that better meet the needs of my students and colleagues. This willingness to evolve will allow me to lead with innovation and foster meaningful, lasting change.
