The Heartbeat of Change: Exploring Education, Psychology, and Leadership

Why?

This is the first question we ask as a child, and it stays as a promenade question for the rest of our lives. We need to know why. We need a reason to care about a topic.

When we want to evoke change we need to answer the question as to why we are doing something.  If we start with the why, we can define how and what we are doing and why someone should care. What is your purpose, cause, and belief (Sinek, 2009)? With an innovation project in education, we need to know why we are doing it, and what goals and beliefs we hold that show our passion for a topic. To invoke change within an institution you must be motivated and passionate, you must express why you want and believe in this change.

In education, many people are resistant to change. The best way to invoke change is to ask questions, not to give more information (Crucial Learning, 2015). We must help others recognize what they already believe in. As humans we innately know what we should be doing to create change, but our environment controls if we will make the moves needed (Asacker, 2014). We care about how others view us, and when we make a change there will be others who may disagree with our viewpoint. Effective communication can be the driving force needed to create meaningful innovation among others (Kotter, 2011).

Once we identify and address why people should care about our ideas, we can create a real difference in the world.
